I’ll be speaking at several events over the next few weeks. If you’re interested in food or food writing, try to stop by or check back here for roundups of the most interesting parts of the events.
Jan. 27: I’ll be in Santa Fe at the Edible Institute. Along with Brian Halweil, Tom Philpott and Sam Fromartz, I’ll be discussing how best to cover sustainable food and agriculture.
Feb. 4: I’ll be joining my The Washington Post’s Joe Yonan, the City Paper’s Tim Carman and Monica Bhide to read our pieces from the new 2009 Best New Food Writing. (You can read mine here.) At the end we’ll be authographing copies. (Now’s your chance!)
Feb. 12: I’ll be joining an incredible group of writers at the Food Writers Conference in New York. My panel, about the future of food writing at newspapers, will also feature the New York Times’s Kim Severson, Newsday’s Sylvia Carlton and former WP writer Judy Weinraub. But there will be plenty of other luminaries there too including: Toni Allegra, Barbara Fairchild, Amanda Hesser, David Leite and Marion Nestle.
I am a Brooklyn-based food writer who covers food politics, trends and sustainability issues. My work appears in the Washington Post, (where I was a staff writer), the New York Times, Slate, New York magazine and other publications. On this site, you will find my blog and links to my written work and my podcast,

on 9/30/10 you wrote an article regarding the Child Nutrition Reauthorization Bill. In the article it notes Democrats are worried about a potential loss of food budget of $59.00 for a family of 4. You might want to read an article by Jack Dolan/LA Times that notes the locales where $69million dollards from the SNAP EBT cards have been used – Las Vegas, Hawaii, cruises, and many more destinations. At least with the Child Reauthorization Bill the $59.00 would actually go towards feeding those children in that family of 4.
Schools, USDA, and the manufactures selling products to the schools do not get enough credit for what they do for the money they do it with.
Thanks
